The Different Methods of Drug Testing

Drug testing is a strategy that is employed by many companies to ensure that their employees are drug-free and to keep a safe and efficient workplace. Different methods of drug testing can be used, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Hair Testing

This is one of the latest methods invented. It was developed under the premise that when drugs are circulated in the blood, they enter the scalp’s blood vessels and are filtered through the hair. These then remain in the hair and provide a permanent record of drug use. This is a very thorough method of detection, however, it is not normally used for mass drug testing due to the costs.

Perspiration Testing

This type of test involves a patch that is worn on the skin for a period of time. The patch is able to detect the presence of drugs or their metabolites as they are excreted through the skin. This is also not suitable for companies since they tend to employ random drug testing.

Blood Testing

Blood testing is another good method since this is where the drug actually circulates. It is used primarily for accident investigations or for insurance medicals. However, it is only suitable within 22 hours of consumption of the drug, and after that the drug will no longer be detectable. It is also regarded as expensive and intrusive.

Urine Testing

Urine testing is a quick and painless way to test for drugs. It is the most popular method of drug testing for employers. Like the other methods, it checks the urine for the presence of the drug and its metabolites. Since urine is a product of the filtering of the blood, the presence of the drug can be easily determined. Also, due to the development of new technologies, urine testing is easier than ever. There is one test called the 5 Panel Drug Test that can detect five of the most common street drugs: cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, marijuana, and PCP. It can be bought in bulk for cheaper, meaning that even smaller companies can have access to this test. Additionally, it is 99% accurate, can be easily transported, ideal for home use, and has a long shelf life. Results are fast, and can be read within five minutes. Because of this test, it is now easier than ever to keep our colleagues and loved ones safe from the dangers of drug use.
